HOW DEEP IS YOUR LOVE?
SELECTED READING: 2 Corinthians 8:7
“But as you abound in everything—in faith, in speech, in knowledge, in all diligence, and in your love for us—see that you abound in this grace also.”
In this letter to the church at Corinth, Paul is admonishing them to abound in the grace of generosity, just as the church at Macedonia had demonstrated. However, Paul was quick to point out in verse 8 that this was not a command, but a way in which to prove the truth of the Gospel in their lives through love. Love for others, love for God’s kingdom, and also to demonstrate that the Gospel has the power to detach us from a love of money.
Throughout 2 Corinthians chapters 8 and 9, Paul continues to explain how giving is a way in which to measure the depth of our love for God, just as Christ demonstrated the depth of His love for us, by giving up something that he did not have to (in this case, His Life!) so that we could have what we previously did not. Forgiveness of sin, reconciliation to God, and eternal life! All and only through Christ’s sacrifice!
Have you ever done anything out of duty or obligation, rather than a true desire to? Perhaps you’ve bought someone a gift because they got one for you, or maybe you’ve said something nice about someone because you felt like you had to for whatever reason.
Compare that with a time when you have given someone a gift because you simply love them so much, you can’t wait to give it to them, even if there’s no chance they’ll ever give you a gift in return!
This is what Christ’s gift to us on the cross was, and is the same joy that God wants
"GIVING IS...AN OUTPOURING OF YOUR HEART..."
us to have when we give to support the work of His Kingdom.
God doesn’t need your money—it already belongs to Him anyway! He desires to be in such rich relationship with you that your gift not only demonstrates your heart of thanksgiving, but is an outpouring of your heart in light of the Gospel!
Some people give because they know that they can’t take it with them and some because they think they have to, but the true joy of giving comes when you just can’t help it! May it be so for you!
