KEEP ON KEEPIN' ON
SELECTED READING: 1 Timothy 4:16
“Take heed to yourself and to the doctrine. Continue in them, for in doing this you will save both yourself and those who hear you.
Towards the end of her life, my grandmother, Lorraine, experienced a significant stroke. Although she lived for several years after that, this once active and impeccably well-mannered lady was beset by changes in personality and a body that no longer moved in the way she felt like she was telling it to. Yet, despite all of this, she was resolved to regain whatever was still available to her through therapy and determination. Her motto throughout this period of her life was “Keep On Keepin’ On.” Today, it is inscribed on her grave marker.
In our Christian lives, as we consider our success at the various Spiritual disciplines that we learn about in a careful study of God’s Word, it is easy to become overwhelmed, and seek out a shortcut. After all, we live in a culture where the impatience of waiting on a response to a text message sets in after seconds, as opposed to the weeks or even months that our grandparents or great-grandparents had to wait on return
correspondence to a letter that they had mailed. Yet, we know that the evidence and confirmation of our faith is found in our continual growth in Christ.
This is not something that appears overnight or can be “life-hacked.” This is where we must turn to the Holy Spirit and allow Him to do the work of magnifying
"...ALLOW GOD TO CONTINUE THE WORK THAT HE HAS BEGUN IN YOU..."
Christ in our lives that He desires to do. Left to our own desires, we would never seek out Spiritual growth and more Christ-likeness in our lives. Practicing Spiritual disciplines in your life will set the stage for just such a transformation to take place. Make no mistake, our salvation is not worksbased (just check out Galatians 3:2–3), but our continued growth, good works, and as Colossians 1:23 puts it, being “stable and steadfast” are all by-products of our faith in Christ.
So, while it may not be easy, it may not be convenient, and it may not be what you even want to do, allow God to continue the work that He has begun in you, and you will find that time in His Word, time in prayer, time in worship, time being generous, and time serving others will all bring you more satisfaction, contentment, and joy than anything you could have ever come up with on your own!
Just keep on keepin’ on!
