Day 1 | peavine

DAY  1

“For the word of God is living and effective and sharper than any double-edged sword, penetrating as far as the separation of soul and spirit, joints and marrow. It is able to judge the thoughts and intentions of the heart.”

One of the greatest mistakes a Christian can make today is to take his Bible for granted. We must memorize God’s Word. We must study God’s Word. We must meditate on God’s Word. But at the foundation of all of these, and before we can do any of these, we must read God’s Word. Neglecting the regular reading of God’s Word is nothing new. In fact, Jesus often asked questions about a person’s understanding of the Scriptures beginning with the words, “Have you not read . . .?” (Matthew 19:4, Mark 12:10). He assumed that the people of God were reading the Word of God. His question, then, also implies that they were familiar with the entire Word of God.

Our perspective must change from “I don’t have time for it,” to, “I cannot live without it.” We must know that the Word of God is living and has the power to not only tell us what direction to take, but also what correction to make. Paul says in 2 Timothy 3:16, “All Scripture is inspired by God and is profitable for teaching, for rebuking, for correcting, for training in righteousness . . .”

Here are some tips that may help you make Bible reading a habit in your life:

1. Set a time and put it on your calendar as an appointment. How much more important is meeting with God through His Word than an appointment with your dentist?

2. Read for depth not distance. The point of reading God’s Word is not to finish the book, but to connect with the author of the book.

3. Determine a one for one. Predetermine for yourself something that you will not do in a day if you have not first read your Bible.

4. Journal what you learn. Write down those things that are significant to you and that make a difference in your life.

5. Don’t let Satan defeat you. It can be our tendency to give up when we fail. Don’t allow Satan to get the victory.
