WEEK 3 - COLOSSIANS 3

Paul's time in Ephesus was interesting, to say the least. God began to do miraculous things through him, even healing the sick through Paul's handkerchiefs and aprons. One single verse, Acts 19:19, tells a beautiful story of life change and unwavering commitment. Of those who believed in Ephesus, many began to confess their sins openly. This led to a group who had previously practiced magic bringing out all their books and burning them in front of everyone. These books weren't cheap, adding up to 50,000 Greek drachmas, or approximately 50,000 days' wages. The people weren't content to simply put the books away or even sell them. The way forward was to destroy any association with their old lives. Paul called the church at Colosse to a similar commitment, to move on from the old way.

Moving on from the empty religious practices of the day, Paul encourages the Colossians to seek the things above, not earthly things. He sees this objective in two parts: what believers put away and what believers put on. Christians should put away sexual immorality, impurity, lust, evil desire, greed, anger, wrath, malice, slander, and filthy language (vv.5-9). Followers of Christ should put on compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, patience, forgiveness, love, and peace. Followers of Christ should be led by the word of God.

“A godly man never leaves

repenting, because he never

leaves sinning.”

– Jeremiah Burroughs

As a Christian, have you taken steps to burn away easy access to your old, sinful lifestyle? Do you know of areas in your heart or specific sins that God is calling you to put away? This chapter gives clear lists of sin and spiritual fruit, which list best describes your life? Are you most characterized by the sin in your life or the fruit?

APPLICATION QUESTIONS:

  1. Is there a sin I need to confess or an attitude I need to change?

  2. Is there a command I need to obey or an example I need to follow?

  3. Does this verse teach me something about God? About myself?
